Uncertain times call for leaders with a subtle mix of characteristics. They must provide comfort and stability, show empathy, exude optimism, proceed transparently and sincerely – all while making difficult decisions, taking courageous action, and decisively guiding their teams.

The answer to the value of what you have to offer can’t be isolated from the context.

How much? There is no easy answer to this question but the best way to address it is to understand a company’s typical thought process.

Personal branding is about how everything you do: every job, every social and personal endeavor will define who you are and what you can offer in the next step of your career. You cannot go wrong if you focus on that.

A fit at all levels is not easy. Many elements that were once considered intangible are now part of a tangible evaluation process and from the standpoint of an executive it is not about right or wrong, good or bad, it is simply about fit.

The ultimate purpose is to not just focus on the finish line but also understand the best method to get there and not hope or expect but drive to achieve our career goals in the desired time.

Why are you better than the rest? How do you maintain that edge? Who can replace you? What can make you irrelevant?

Doing your homework is an important part of interviewing. So be prepared with your answers and be aware of the hidden messages that you will convey.

Bottom line: You cannot afford to drift and let outside factors define your future and your career. Take control, take ownership and drive it.
